New online hub brings Northamptonshire’s rich heritage to life
A new website has been launched to give people access to Northamptonshire’s Historic Environment Record (HER) - a comprehensive digital archive featuring more than 65,000 records that chart the story of the county’s rich and varied past.
From the Palaeolithic period to the present day, the HER is a vital tool for planners, land managers, researchers, and anyone interested in local history. It brings together detailed information on archaeological sites, historic landscapes, listed buildings, scheduled monuments, and artefacts, helping to protect and celebrate Northamptonshire’s diverse historic environment.
The new online platform makes this wealth of information easily accessible through a searchable interactive map, allowing users to explore heritage assets across the county in just a few clicks.
The launch follows a successful Historic England audit carried out in August 2025, which praised the HER for its significant progress and consistently high standards. The audit reported: “Since the previous audit in 2020, which was well-rated, the Northamptonshire HER has continued to make improvements to its service and has achieved a particularly high score this year. The HER is consistently strong across all areas assessed under the current audit scheme and has clearly demonstrated its commitment to improvement.”
Cllr James Petter, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Local Economy, Culture and Leisure, said: “This launch represents an exciting step forward in how we preserve, manage, and celebrate our county’s historic environment. Northamptonshire’s heritage is one of its greatest assets - it connects our communities, attracts visitors, and inspires pride in place. The HER website opens up that story to everyone.”
The Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record is managed by West Northamptonshire Council and continues to evolve as new discoveries and insights are added. By making the information freely accessible online, the Council aims to support responsible development, enhance understanding of the county’s history, and inspire future generations to value and protect their shared heritage. Explore the database on the HER website.

Waste and recycling arrangements this Christmas
With the festive season fast approaching, West Northamptonshire Council is advising residents of the arrangements for waste and recycling collections over the Christmas and New Year period.
Collection changes
The public holidays will affect households on a Thursday or Friday bin collection this year, so Cosgrove will NOT be affected.
South Northants area
· Collections due Thursday 25 December will take place on Saturday 27 December
· Collections due Friday 26 December will take place on Monday 29 December
· Collections due Thursday 1 January will take place on Saturday 3 January.
Garden waste
Subscribers are advised there will be a short break in the garden waste collection service, which will be suspended from Monday 22 December through to Sunday 4 January. It will resume its usual schedule from the week beginning Monday 5 January.
Household Waste Recycling Centres
Recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day, and will close early on Christmas Eve, at 2pm.
With those exceptions they will be open from 10am to 4pm as usual, offering a great way to dispose of a range of materials, from excess household waste, to recycling and larger items that can’t be collected as part of your kerbside collection service.
Please remember if you are visiting any of our sites on or after 3 November 2025, you must book a slot in advance. Find out more information about the booking system
Additional recycling
If you have more recycling than your bin can handle, you can put it in clear plastic bags or boxes and present it alongside your recycling bins or boxes. You can also take this to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre
Real tree collections
Crews will collect real Christmas trees from Monday 5 January through to Friday 16 January. You do not need a garden waste subscription to take advantage of this.
Residents in the Daventry and South Northants areas should put real Christmas trees out on the day garden waste is due to be collected in their area.
In the Northampton area trees should be put out next to recycling bins, while those on sack collections can present trees beside their recycling boxes.
Please ensure trees over 6ft tall are cut in half so they fit in the lorries safely. They can also be taken to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre
Food waste
Food waste bins will continue to be collected on their usual weekly schedule. Please remember you can recycle leftover raw and cooked foods, including veg peelings, egg shells, out-of-date food, plate scrapings, solid fats, meat and fish bones.
Do not put in any liquids and don’t forget that when it comes to lining your caddy - any bag will do! Find out how to make the most of your food waste collection service
Keep on top of collections
Downloadable bin calendars with information about waste and recycling arrangements for your area will be available from the Bins, Recycling and Waste pages of West Northamptonshire Council’s website in November.
You can check your collection day and set up alerts on your mobile by downloading the free West Northamptonshire Council app from the Apple or Google Play stores

Home Upgrade Grant Expands Eligibility Criteria to Reach More Low-Income Households
Low-income off-gas households with an annual income of £36,000 or less across West Northamptonshire are urged to find out if they could access essential funding to help them deliver energy efficiency upgrades and install clean heating systems.
The funding is made possible through the Home Upgrade Grant Phase 2 funding bid secured by West Northamptonshire Council (WNC).
Responding to feedback and a thorough review of the program, the Department of Energy and Sustainable Net Zero (DESNZ) has increased the household income threshold to £36,000, up from £31,000, to ensure that more families can benefit from this vital initiative.
The expanded eligibility criteria are anticipated to increase the number of eligible households by approximately 19% nationally within the scheme. This means more families will have access to the support they need to improve energy efficiency, reduce fuel poverty, and contribute to the UK’s Net Zero commitment by 2050.
WNC is partnered with Agility Eco to be able to offer this scheme to the people of West Northamptonshire this opportunity by arranging and carrying out the improvement assessment and all the retrofit work.
Local installers in each region will guide customers through the application journey, helping them understand and establish eligibility for the scheme. If eligible, the installer will identify which improvements for the home will provide the greatest benefits and arrange any necessary surveys and installations.
The home must also be heated by alternative fuels including electricity, oil, liquid propane gas, and solid fuels. The energy efficiency criteria will be determined by the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of the property and residents will be supported with this part of the eligibility process during application. Residents will be provided with a free EPC where they do not already have one.
The scheme allows funding per property to provide a range of energy and cost saving upgrades, depending on the specific circumstances such as the fuel source, energy efficiency and EPC rating of the home, with the most funding available for the least efficient homes heated by the most polluting fuel sources.
Cllr Adam Brown, Cabinet Member for Housing, Culture and Leisure at West Northamptonshire Council, said: “With energy costs continuing to place severe pressure on household budgets, this scheme is an important chance for local residents to improve their homes, save money on their energy bills and reduce their carbon emissions. I would encourage anyone who thinks they might be eligible to get in touch to find out more.”
How to Check Eligibility:
You can check if your property has an EPC and learn about your SAP score by at Find an energy certificate - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
West Northamptonshire Council understands that energy efficiency needs may change over time. If work has been done on your property since your last EPC assessment, your SAP score may have improved. Our dedicated installers will be able to verify your eligibility during your assessment.
You can access information and apply for the grant here.
